Battery Metals, Inc. opens supplier capacity for U.S. refinery that turns battery scrap into finished metal
North Carolina company invites collectors, recyclers and manufacturers to reserve feedstock capacity ahead of its 2028 start, as the state’s lithium-ion battery landfill ban approaches
WILMINGTON, N.C., October 6, 2026 – Battery Metals, Inc. (BMI) today opened feedstock capacity reservations for its domestic battery metals refinery, which will take lithium-ion batteries, manufacturing scrap and black mass all the way to finished metal on one U.S. site.
The announcement comes ahead of North Carolina’s ban on landfilling lithium-ion batteries, which takes effect December 1, and as new federal rules on black mass exports push more material toward domestic buyers.
“Most battery recycling in North America stops at black mass, an intermediate that has been shipped overseas to be finished,” said Derek Ramsell, founder and CEO of Battery Metals, Inc. “We are building the refinery that finishes the job here. Suppliers get one buyer for every format and chemistry, and the country keeps the metal.”
BMI’s patent-pending hydrometallurgical process, with front-end engineering complete, is designed to produce nickel, cobalt and copper cathode designed to LME grade, along with lithium carbonate, manganese sulfate and recycled graphite.
The refinery will accept EV, fleet and grid storage packs, modules and cells; consumer and portable batteries and battery-embedded devices; cell and electrode manufacturing scrap; and third-party black mass and shredder output.
Suppliers can choose a per-pound price grid, shred-sample-settle, metal payable plus treatment fee, or tolling, with long-term agreements earning priority scheduling. Reservations are non-binding until a contract is signed. BMI begins receiving material in 2028. Suppliers can start at batterymetalsinc.com/suppliers.
